There are many benefit Payment Processing Centers across the Country. The one you get is based upon where you were born when your SSN was established. They are further divided by age groups. Individuals age 54 and higher typically receive benefits more quickly than those under age 54. Different Payment Centers have very diverse workloads. In my experience, the California Payment Centers are either WAY more efficient or have fewer claims to process per Payment Center Worker on the East Coast.
Regardless, you will get paid faster if you already have a bank account registered with SSA before your claim is approved. The best way to do that is to call SSA 800-772-1213 and say "agent, agent, agent" over and over until the auto attendent puts you in line. The shortest wait times are around 7 p.m. Pacific Time. The line is open between 7 a.m. Eastern to 7 p.m. Pacific. Obviously, the rest of the Country is doing something else by 7 p.m. Pacific Time so there are fewer people waiting in line to talk to an agent.
Starting in 2015, direct deposit for benefit payment is mandatory. You can put your bank information in your Application, but if you don't happen to have it when you apply, or if it changes, call the 800 number.
It is a major undertaking if they pay the wrong person your benefits because your bank account info was not correct.
