Over time, it seems as if drivers are getting more unsafe. A driver is controlling a vehicle that can weigh 6000 pounds and more. When that driver is not safe, and when that driver hurts someone, the weight and mass of the striking vehicle is so great that severe injuries can be caused. It does not take a huge impact to cause damage because of the weight and speed of the striking vehicles.
There is no question that with cell phones and text messaging drivers are more distracted than ever. Some states forbid drivers from talking on their telephones while driving, but many states do not forbid that conduct. It is very difficult for a driver to concentrate on a telephone conversation while operating a vehicle that can weigh more than 6000 pounds. The result is that the distracted driver cannot stop in time, or the distracted driver fails to stop for a stop sign or a stoplight, and if another person is in the way of the vehicle, that person may be seriously injured.
In my experience, the collisions caused by inattentive drivers failing to stop for stop signs and stoplights is more common now than it was 20 years ago. Because these collisions occur at high speeds, the injuries can be more severe as well.
