In order to preserve permanent status in the US while traveling abroad, form I-131 needs to be filled out an filed with the USCIS. This will get the applicant a travel document and help prevent problems with re-entry into the US.

If you Would Like to Apply for Naturalization

Keep in mind, in order to apply for naturalization, a permanent resident must reside continuously in the US for five years. Leaving for one year or more will reset this time frame, with or withour travel documents. Consult with an immigration lawyer to find out your options if you would like to apply for naturalized citizenship.
