State Tax in Utah

All tax returns are due by 15th of April or the next business day if the 15th is a holiday or if it falls on a weekend. There are six tax brackets for single filers in the great State of Utah:

  1. 2.3 per cent on the first $ 1,000 of taxable income
  2. 3.3 per cent for a taxable income between $ 1,001 and $ 2,000
  3. 4.2 per cent for a taxable income between $ 2,001 and $ 3,000
  4. 5.2 per cent for a taxable income between $ 3,001 and $ 4,000
  5. Six per cent for a taxable income between $ 4,001 and $ 5,500
  6. 6.98 per cent for a taxable income of $ 5,501 and over


For joint/married filers of income tax the rates remain the same but, the tax brackets are doubled. There is an alternative tax option for taxpayers: a flat rate of 5.35 per cent.

Sales State Tax in Utah

As of January 1st 2008 Utah levies 4.65 per cent Sales Tax whereas the sales tax on food was decreased from 4.75 per cent to 2.75 per cent. The local Government bodies levy additional taxes that vary greatly location to location with the Beehive State.

Gasoline and diesel is taxed at 24.5 cents per gallon. A pack of 20 cigarettes is taxed at 69.5 cents.

Personal Property and Inheritance Tax Law in Utah

All property taxes are collected locally. There is a 100 per cent tax on the assessed fair value of property. There are a few tax exemptions that bring relief to taxpayers in Utah. This complicated the tax filing by taxpayers. It is advisable to hire the services of an accountant in order to fully benefit form relief programs on offer. The great State of Utah does not levy any Inheritance tax.
