I-131: Application for Travel Document
For permanent US non-citizens, traveling outside of the United States for ovewr on year can trigger an abandonment of status with the USCIS. In order to preserve permanent status in the US while traveling abroad, form I-131 needs to be filled out an filed with the USCIS. This will get the applicant a travel document and help prevent problems with re-entry into the US.
If you Would Like to Apply for Naturalization
Keep in mind, in order to apply for naturalization, a permanent resident must reside continuously in the US for five years. Leaving for one year or more will reset this time frame, with or withour travel documents. Application Process
In order to obtain travel documentation, the applicant must be present in the US. While it is possible to have your document sent to a foreign embassy or address, often times, the applicant will be called in to pick up the document and get electronic fingerprints taken.
