U.S. Supreme Court Turns Down Navajo Demand for More Coal Money

For the second time in 17 years, the Navajo Nation’s request for a price increase on their coal supply was denied by the Supreme Court. In 1992, the Navajo’s filed suit to bump the price of coal that the Peabody Coal Co. paid per ton, which was set at about 37.5 cents. The coal comes from a mine located on the Navajo reservation in the southwestern United States.

Vermont Legalizes Gay Marriage

In a historic move yesterday, the Vermont Senate overruled a decision made by the state’s governor in regards to legalizing gay marriage. Vermont will now be the fourth state in the United States to allow same sex couples the same rights as heterosexual couples. This decision came only a week after Iowa’s move to embrace same sex marriages.

Social Security Surplus Disappearing Rapidly

Several years ago, it was predicted that fiscal year 2017 would see the drop off of social security, as it began to drag down federal finances. However, recent reports from the White House and the Congressional Budget Office show that social security benefits will actually exceed incoming payroll taxes by about $7 billion. This is the first time that such an occurrence has happened since 1984.
