The federal government has recently begun to crack down on laws regulating the amount of lead-based paint allowed in children’s clothing and toys. According to new laws, all items that are sold should be tested for traces of lead. This has many benefits, and thousands of children will be safe from lead-poisoning- a terrible fate that kills many children each year.
However, some are worried about the negative effects that banning lead-based paint will have on the thrift stores. These stores take donations of toys and clothing and re-sell them for cheap prices to needy families. The proceeds fund other charities that the thrift stores support, that may provide food or shelter to homeless individuals or toys for sick children.
Thrift stores may be forced to throw truckloads of toys and clothing away, if lawmakers do not seriously consider the consequences. For more information on the new laws, contact your lawyer today!
