In the rough economy, several states are struggling to find ways to earn money. A few have come across a great way to raise funds, but also to protect the lives of its citizens. By cracking down on seatbelt laws, many hope to be able to collect money from a federally-funded program.
Most states only have a law that allows a police officer to pull over drivers who are not wearing their seatbelt if they first commit some other offense, such as speeding. Once pulled over, the officer can also issue a citation for not wearing a belt. However, if the driver is abiding all other traffic laws, he or she cannot be pulled over. Lawmakers in several states are working to make not buckling your seatbelt a primary offense, meaning that you can be pulled over simply for not wearing one.
