Over two years ago, a young Texas girl was charged with attacking police when they came after her for suspected prostitution charges. They had received reports that there were some white prostitutes in the area, but the young girl was black. She and her parents testified that she was assaulted by the police, and she was found clinging to a tree with scratches on her body. The officers said that the girl scratched herself during the struggle.
A jury recently decided, 5-1, which they were not going to convict the girl of any assault charges. The trial before the decision was reached had to be dismissed for a witness’ misstatement, but prosecution has said that it will not attempt another re-trial in the future.
Now the girl and her family are considering a civil rights suit against the police officers who allegedly assaulted her for charges that were clearly false. Even as a child, the girl has a set of civil rights that cannot be infringed upon by police or anyone.
