Following a fatal fire, which tore through a co-op complex in New York, several counties are considering changes to the necessary regulations on fire hydrants. Now, even those in private communities are subject to regular water pressure tests and public inspection reports.
Firefighters at the scene said that the lack of water pressure from the co-op’s hydrant made putting out the flames much more difficult. Legislators want to make the event of this crisis obsolete. State Assemblyman Marc Alessi also wants to introduce the law to the entire state within two weeks.
Within the counties that were affected, public hearings are now being held to determine the support for the bill. If it is approved, it may pass into law within the next month. Legislators hope that tougher restrictions will prevent future tragedies and deaths by fire.
