Seattle Offers Free Legal Clinic for Gay Couples

July 15, 2009

Several bar associations across the country, including the King County Bar Association (Seattle, Washington) and the GLBT Bar Association of Washington have begun to set up free legal clinics for gay couples residing in their states. Since the federal government has recently said that marriage is defined as a legally binding relationship between a man and a woman, many gay couples have struggled with their rights as American citizens.

Some states “legalized” gay marriage, only to be told by the federal government that they would be denied money for Medicare and Medicaid programs if they offered benefits to gay couples. For this reason, many are stepping up to give these couples the tools and information that they need to take their cases to court.

Gay couples are now given free seminars on family law, divorce law, and estate planning advice, catered specifically to their needs.
