After their young friend was killed by a drunk driver, while she was riding home from a competition with her mother, a group of figure skaters has decided to do something about drivers who choose to get behind the wheel, while intoxicated.
Currently, Illinois has a pretty strict set of rules about those who drive drunk, including the mandatory use of interlock-ignition devices in their cars, sometimes even after the first offense. These devices do not allow drivers to start their cars without first blowing into a breathalyzer.
The young figure skaters are asking that the law be changed, so that even first time offenders will have to pay a fine of up to $1,000, spend 30 days in jail and have their license revoked for a period of two years. They also want subsequent offenders to get much harsher punishments.
The changes will be known as “Lacey’s Law,” in honor of the girl who was killed. This law is significant, because previously, drivers could not serve jail time after their first offense.
