While many people who live in the city of Seattle have little to no trouble getting their hands on marijuana for medical purposes, those who live in more rural or suburban areas have difficulty. Because these people are generally in severe pain, and are in no condition to drive for hours to visit a licensed marijuana “prescriber,” lawmakers are trying to make it easier for small neighborhood clinics to certify the use of medical marijuana.
Those who use marijuana must obtain legal documentation from their physicians. This will protect them for any prosecution, concerning the possession of the otherwise illegal drug. However, because these are only given out by doctors at large hospitals in the city, many patients have trouble reaching them.
The bill, which has been proposed in Senate, will expand the definition of physician to include any health care provider. This means that registered nurses, physicians’ assistants and osteopathic physicians will be able to provide the necessary documentation for their patients.
