Supreme Court Upholds Firearm Ban for Domestic Abusers

Yesterday, the United States Supreme Court ruled that those individuals who have been convicted of crimes related to domestic violence are no longer allowed to carry or own firearms. The passing of this ruling has been the work of several agencies and organizations, which promote non-violence, gun control and domestic harmony.

The members of these groups feel that when someone who has been convicted of domestic abuse owns a gun, his or her family is further threatened. Having a firearm in the house escalates the situation, quickly and may result in additional violence.

However, the debate that the Supreme Court justices had to clear up was the language of the law. It had existed previously, but it was worded so vaguely, that it was difficult to enforce. Also, many states do not consider the “misdemeanor of domestic abuse” to be a true crime. Therefore, they would not have the right to seize the firearms of a defendant. The entire issue also treads lightly around the Second Amendment rights of every American citizen to own a weapon.
