Senator Proposes Legislation to Limit Ticket Scalping
Monday April 6, 2009
Senator Charles Schumer is working to introduce legislation to the United States Senate, which would limit the freedoms of ticket scalpers. Because it is common practice for ticket re-sellers to scoop up the best seats at a concert or event, fans miss out on the opportunity to buy these tickets for themselves- at lower prices. The proposed legislation would create a two-day waiting period imposed on the ticket scalpers.
The idea is that this law would allow fans the opportunity to purchase tickets on their own, before the scalpers can buy them all up. According to Schumer, Ticketmaster supports his idea to make ticket resale more transparent. He wants to meet with this company and more to discuss a code-of-conduct for ticket scalpers.
The bill will be introduced in two weeks, when the Senate reconvenes. It will have to be passed by the House and the Senate before it can be signed into law by President Obama.
