The recent spate of food and product recalls has raised much attention to increasing the standards and enforcements from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Given all the different food products that families consume each day, it is important to stay abreast of the various food recalls, market withdrawals and safety alerts. Below are some of the recent food recalls.

- If you have consumed any of these products, please contact your doctor immediately.
- Get in touch with the manufacturer. Most companies will provide a full refund if you have purchased the recalled products.

Product: Breyers® All Natural Cookies & Cream and All Natural Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream
Date Recalled: October 22, 2009
Issue: Allergy alert due to improperly labeled tubs not declaring the ingredient wheat. The mispackaged ice cream product was distributed in Alabama, Arizona, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee, Trinidad and Virginia.
Product: Plum Organics Apple and Carrot Baby Food in Portable Pouches
Date Recalled: October 19, 2009
Issue: Possible botulism contamination after an error in formulation. Affects pouches with UPC code #890180001221.

Issue: Nutricia has been informed by the manufacturer of Neocate® that, due to a one-time blending error, a limited quantity of the individual cans of Neocate® Infant (original formula) contain protein levels lower than that declared on the label.

Issue: Yummy Foods Company of San Francisco, California, is recalling its 17 oz./480g Wife Cake because the product contains undeclared egg and wheat. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to egg or wheat run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.

Issue: Potential to be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes (food borne pathogen responsible for 2,500 illnesses and 500 deaths in the U.S. annually read more).
