Governor Signs Two New Criminal Justice Bills Into Law
Governor George E. Pataki today announced the signing of two important public safety bills into law. The “Bill Leaf-Brandi Woods Law” increases the punishment for repeat offenders of DWI laws who cause injury or death to others through their offenses. The “Trooper Craig Todeschini Law” creates a new crime for refusing to obey directions to stop by police and recklessly fleeing in a motor vehicle where such action results in injury or death to another. “Today, I would like to thank the families of Bill Leaf, Brandi Woods, and NYS Trooper Craig Todeschini, for whom these laws will be named. I admire their courage, sacrifice and tireless dedication through their tragedies to ensure the passage of these bills that make New York's roads that much safer and ensure that the brave men and women who protect us everyday, are also kept safe,” Governor Pataki said.
“Over the past 12 years, we have continued to fight for tougher penalties for those that drink and drive and put their own lives and the lives of others in grave jeopardy. The Leaf-Woods law will deter those that would otherwise re-offend, with the looming potential to face increased penalties. Coupled with Craig's Law, we will protect our men and women in uniform who put their lives on the line, day in and day out, to ensure that we, as individuals, remain safe and that our children and communities remain protected from those that wish to do harm,” the Governor added.
Senator John A. DeFrancisco said, “I am proud to have worked on behalf of the Woods and Leaf families, Trooper Craig Todeschini’s family, and all New Yorkers to get the Bill Leaf-Brandi Woods legislation and the Craig J. Todeschini Law passed and signed into law. The Bill Leaf-Brandi Woods Law will severely punish repeat offenders who cause serious physical injury or death on our roadways and the Craig J. Todeschini Law will also safeguard the law enforcement officials who put themselves in harm's way to protect us.” Read more at ny.gov
