I have been an attorney for 23 years working exclusively in the area of Family Law. After an initial start handling workers compensation cases, I spent nine years as an assistant county attorney handling child protection, child support, juvenile delinquencies/truancies, guardianships/conservatorships and mental commitments in Southern Minnesota. In the late 90âs I headed up a special grant to develop and teach battered womenâs advocates in basic housing laws along with handling housing and divorce cases. In 2000 I spent 7 months handling bankruptcy cases for families in financial crises. Since 2001, I have worked exclusively on family law matters involving divorce, post-divorce, custody, parenting time, child/spousal support and property matters. My dedication to my clientâs having successful resolutions of their family matters is based on my personal experience in being divorced and successfully raising two children in a bi-nuclear family situation. My philosophy is that âChildren are not a prize to be won.â They deserve the love and affection of both parents in their life. In my practice, I see my job as assisting individuals and parents through the legal maze so that they can focus on healing and moving forward with their lives.
My volunteer work for which I recently received recognition was due to my work as a volunteer attorney in association with Central Minnesota Legal Services. I am a regular volunteer at the Law Clinic located in the Wright County law library. It is a program that allows individuals 15 minute consultations with an attorney. I also regularly handle family law cases through Central Minnesota Regional Legal Services on a pro bono basis. (If you are in need of pro bono representation, please see our contact your local legal aid office to enquire about their requirements for service.) In addition, I volunteer teach the legal process section of the Parenting through Divorce Class in Wright County. I am committed to providing this service to parents who need to know the legal process and how to develop child friend parenting plans. I am in the process of developing community education classes to assist pro se individuals through divorce.
AREAS OF PRACTICE
I am very fortunate to practice in two areas that I am passionate about: family law and juvenile law.
During law school I worked for both the Chisago County and Hennepin County Attorney's Offices as a law clerk and Student Certified Attorney. At Chisago County, I was responsible for multiple child protection cases and prosecuted many juvenile delinquency and juvenile traffic offense cases at the first appearance level. At Hennepin County, I worked exclusively in the Juvenile Prosecution Division. I prosecuted numerous juvenile traffic offenses from arraignment to trial. Further, I assisted on many juvenile delinquency cases, including cases involving narcotics, robbery and murder. Effective representation during juvenile delinquency and child protection matters is very important, because there are multiple factors and consequences to consider. While doing juvenile prosecution, I was amazed by the number of offenders that were also in child protection at one time. Successful child protection defense and juvenile delinquency defense has enormous effects.
Family law first appealed to me during law school when I took family law class. The discussions were so personal and emotional. I gained practical family law experience working for Moss & Barnett, P.A. I had the opportunity to assist with multiple divorces. I have experience involving property division, spousal maintenance, child support, child custody and prenuptial agreements. I am also a strong negotiator. My most rewarding experience thus far was assisting with a custody trial. During a custody trial the welfare of the child is in the hands of the judge. Hard work and passionate representation are crucial.
My passion comes from my family. My husband is a police officer. This makes for interesting discussions and insight into some police actions. Further, our daughter is the greatest joy in my life. Her happiness guides my choices in life. My role as an attorney is to assist families through the legal technicalities so they can focus on the future.
