If you are disabled, do not wait until all of your assets are gone. Disability does not require that you deplete your assets before you apply. Given the length of time that this process can take, you should apply within the year of becoming disabled. The longer you wait, the more difficult gathering medical records can be. Physicians that leave practices can confuse the medical record gathering process in that the medical record maybe split between two groups of physicians.

The definition of disability for Social Security Purposes is ..."the inability to do ANY substantial gainful activity by reason of any medically determinable physical or mental impairment which can be expected to result in death or which has lasted or can be expected to last for a continuous period of not less than 12 months.
