J. Mike Lawter
J. Mike Lawter heads Lawter & Associates, PLLC, a law firm dealing extensively in workersâ compensation and personal injury, that is based out of Oklahoma City and Tulsa. Since graduating from Oklahoma City University law school in 1974, Lawter has tried hundreds of these cases in Oklahoma and is licensed to practice law in Texas. His law firm is one of the fastest growing in Oklahoma.
A member of the Oklahoma legislature from 1976 to 1986, Lawter served in the House of Representatives as chairman of the House Industry and Labor Relations Committee. During his stint in the legislature, he wrote most of the reforms in the unemployment insurance laws, and was author of the 1983 unemployment revisions which saved the unemployment trust fund from bankruptcy and kept the state in compliance with federal rules.
A life-long resident of Oklahoma City, Lawter attended US Grant High School and received his undergraduate degree in education from Central State University. While in college, he was on the presidentsâ Honor Roll and was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon. In law school he was Senior Class President, voted Outstanding Senior by OCU Law School Alumni Association and Phi Delta Phi Honors legal fraternity.
A retired Major in the Army Reserves, Lawter is involved in many civic activities and has been recognized for his efforts in such publications as Whoâs Who in American Politics, Personalities of the South and has been listed in Outstanding Young Men In America twice. Heâs also received the YMCA community Development Award and was named outstanding legislator in 1983 by the United Auto Workers.     Mike and his wife, Amy, live in Canadian County and Mike has a son named Michael.
