I have represented everyone from real estate develoers and restaurant owners, to retirees with very small incomes. Typically my clients have suffered a reduction in income that leaves them in a position where they are no longer able to pay all of their debts.
Almost every client is able to keep everything that they own, and discharge (eliminate) their liability for debts, other than: tax debt, student loans, and other debts that have priority and usually are not dischargeable; and of course they have to pay secured debts for property that they are keeping.
How did your firm decide on the primary area of practice(s)?
I enjoy bankruptcy work and getting relief for my clients. Therefore, I have made it the major part of my practice.
What experience or education distinguishes your lawyers from others
I have over 20 years of experience in the bankruptcy area. I am an active member of the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys (NACBA). I work to keep up to date on what is happening with bankruptcy law and court decisions, and attend at least 3 - 5 days of continuing education each year to keep up on recent development. I have met with Delaware's Congressman and staff in our U.S. Senators offices to create awareness and support for bankruptcy issues like student loan dischargeability.

There is no typical bankruptcy client, but in lower Delaware there are a lot of people working at low paying jobs that are only a paycheck away from financial trouble. I also see a lot of retirees, and some clients have substantial incomes. I have represented restaurant and other business owners, and real estate developers, and other business people, when their business failed, or they became ill or had other problems that reduced their income.
Financial problems can cause a lot of stress and I try to make the process as simple and painless as possible. When you are in a situation that you can't work your way out of, you need a FRESH START and a second chance.
