Mr. Hornbeck is a native of Reno, Nevada, and graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics and Mathematics in 1968. From 1968 to 1973 he served as a Naval Aviator flying as a Search and Rescue (SAR) helicopter pilot from U.S. Navy ships in the Atlantic and Mediterranian, reaching the rank of Lieutenant, USNR.
Mr. Hornbeck enjoys an active life including skiing in the Sierra Nevada mountians in winter, and hiking and mountain biking in the summer. He also enjoys tennis and racquet ball.
He has been an member of the Sierra Club since 1970 and currently serves as Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Toiyabe Chapter (Nevada and Eastern California). He was a founding member of Friends of Pyramid Lake in 1982 and served as its president for several years.
Among his other civic activities, Mr. Hornbeck has served as a member of the Nevada Mental Health Advisory Board (1985–1988), and on the Board of Directors of Washoe Legal Services (1993–1995). From 1987 to 1995, he served on the Board of Directors of the Reno Chamber Orchestra including terms as President and Treasurer, and from 2000 to 2002 on the Reno Chamber Orchestra Foundation as a Trustee.
