Truck Driving Laws

The majority of regulations that truck drivers must follow are the same as any other driver on America's roadways. But commercial truck drivers also have additional truck driving laws by which they must abide. First, they must obtain a commercial driver's license from their state and fulfill all the requirements of that license. Those requirements vary a bit by state, but generally follow a national standard. In addition, truck drivers are required to know how to inspect their vehicles for safety and maintenance, including airbrakes and other technical and mechanical aspects of the truck. All drivers are also required to follow the federal Hours of Service rules, which limit the hours a commercial vehicle operator can drive between mandated rest periods. Truck driving laws also require drivers to maintain a Record of Duty logbook 24 hours a day, every day, while they're on the road. Finally, there are load limits and truck length limitations with which all truck drivers must comply.

Fast Facts

  • Load limits and truck sizes are monitored at weigh stations located along the highways in the national network.
  • A driver's logbook must be up to date and available for inspection by law enforcement officials at any time.
