Car accidents are a leading cause of death for teens in the United States. Over five thousand teens die each year in car accidents. The first five hundred miles that a teen drives are the most hazardous. Thus, drivers who are sixteen to nineteen years old have the highest risk of being in a fatal car accident. Teen drivers are typically more at risk for crashes because they are more likely to underestimate risky driving conditions. Also, crashes are even more dangerous for teens because they are the age group that is the least likely to wear seatbelts. Only ten percent of teens say they wear their seatbelts when they are riding as a car passenger. Alcohol may play a part in some teen car accidents. In 2006, 31 percent of teen drivers who were in fatal car accidents, had been drinking. Another factor in teen car accidents is the day of the week. Fifty three percent of all fatal teen accidents occur during the weekend.
