Rental Discrimination

Rental discrimination is a term that refers to discrimination that occurs during the course of renting property, usually a home or an apartment. Rental discrimination can take place at any point during the rental process, but usually surfaces at the beginning, with tenant screening. When a tenant is being screened, the landlord is granted with access to their information, some of which is personal and even sensitive. Due to the nature of a rental, a landlord may need to know this information for the sake of records, but landlords are not to discriminate based information that is irrelevant to the rental itself. Information used to deny rental or make otherwise discriminatory actions is considered rental discrimination. This generally consists of information such as race, age, sex, or religion.
