Renew Green Card

To renew Green Card status is an important part of the process for an individual to keep their permanent residency status. It used to be that if an individual was granted a Green Card they had it for life and never had to do anything with it ever again. However if a Green Card was issued after 1989, then there will always be a ten year expiration period associated with it. An individual certainly doesn't have to go through as extensive of a process in the renewal as they did to obtain the Green Card, but it can involve a bit of clarification and questioning if deemed necessary.

Fast Facts

  • A Green Card must be renewed every ten years as any other form of identification would be.
  • This expiration period is to eliminate the likelihood of counterfeiting and tampering.
  • The ten year time period was only instituted in 1989 by the INS.
