The idea of law suits against the medical profession is considered by many to be the number one cause of out of control health care costs. Many mainstream drugs such as Celebrex and Vioxx have prompted over 58,000 registered claims for damages from being prescribed these types of drugs. Toxic torts or medical malpractice law cases are prompted by lawyers who could simply be reading the implications and side effects notes from the literature included in prescription drug packaging and finding enough interest through advertising to gain interest from ordinary people who have taken such drugs. Legal firms will produce expensive class action television ads and write internet articles to stimulate the public toward participation in toxic tort action. Much of the science used in medical malpractice law cases is considered junk science. Such a reference has been made to the former presidential candidate John Edwards who used junk science to win one of his major medical malpractice law cases during his active medical malpractice law career.
