Employment Visa

An employment visa allows an individual to work legally in a country other than their home country. If an individual is interested in entering into a given country for the purposes of business or employment, they need to find a sponsoring company and therefore a job for which their skills are a match. There are a variety of different employment visas available to individuals that have certain time limits and criteria attached to them, but most require that a company in the desired country show that the individual's skills are required and therefore sponsor the visa. There are visas for temporary or seasonal workers, and then employment visas that are meant to serve for a long term with the right to renew them as long as the work and sponsorship continues.

Fast Facts

  • The most common type of employment visa is the H1B visa which allows individuals with a "specialty occupation" to gain sponsorship and visa status to work in another country.
  • An employment visa is usually the first step towards an individual gaining permanent residency in the country that they desire.
