Civil Rights Bill

The civil rights bill of 1964, also known as the Civil Rights Act of 1964, was created to outlaw segregation in schools and public places. It was signed into law by President John F. Kennedy. The bill is used today to defend minority groups against discrimination, but is most frequently cited for creating the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). This group, which is still active today, ensures that every American, regardless of race, national origin, gender, sexual preference or disability, has equal opportunity for employment and that no one will be discriminated against in the professional world.

Fast Facts

  • Some confuse the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission with reverse discrimination- a term that was used to define the racial quotas that companies and public universities once had to eliminate the illusion of discrimination.
  • The EEOC is currently struggling with a vast number of complaints that women receive much lower pay levels than men in the workforce.
