There are specific requirements in every state for drivers to operate commercial motor vehicles. They are based on a federal law enacted in 1986 called the Commercial Motor Vehicle Safety Act. This Act became necessary because there were no regulations on truck drivers to ensure the safety of these large and dangerous vehicles on America's roadways. As a result, too many unnecessary car truck accidents occurred. Once the Act was enacted, the law was standardized, making it illegal to operate a commercial motor vehicle of more than 26,000 pounds or carrying 16 passengers or more without a commercial driver's license (CDL). In order to be issued a CDL, the applicant has to be 21 years of age or older with a clean driving record. In addition, they have to pass a written test and a driving test, showing their knowledge and safety behind the wheel of a commercial vehicle.
