Admiralty laws are strictly federal which differ from the Law of the Sea. The Law of the Sea is a public code of international laws that regulate international relationships through the rights to navigation, minerals, and jurisdictions. Admiralty laws are the laws within a given nation's jurisdiction. Though these laws are completely federally mandated, lawsuits regarding them may be filed in any given state court. Because these laws are much less common for lawsuits, a specialized lawyer will also me much less common. However, because of the number of associated Acts that apply to admiralty law, extensive knowledge and experience is needed. A generally practicing attorney will likely be unfamiliar with these conditions.
