Divorce in Pennsylvania

The Pennsylvania divorce rate averages 3.1 in every 1000 people which is slightly lower than the national average of 3.6. Grounds for divorce in Pennsylvania may be either ‘no fault’ or ‘fault’. No fault consists of mutual agreement to a divorce while fault grounds may be adultery, bigamy, cruelty, or one spouse sentenced to two or more years of imprisonment. Division of property in a Pennsylvania divorce is done through equitable distribution, meaning fair but not necessarily equal. If necessary, the court may impose a lien on certain pieces of marital property as security for alimony payment.
