Lawmakers Allow One-year Stay on Lead Testing

According to some, the recent hysteria about lead-based paint in children’s toys has gotten out of hand. Several lawmakers were calling for the testing of all products that passed through children’s hands, including their school books. Trace amounts of lead may be found in the paint on these books, but critics of the legislation argue that children have been handling the books for years without incident.

Also, children’s libraries complained that they did not have the time, nor the money necessary to test all of the books, and that they could not allow all of the books to be taken from the children and thrown away. Therefore, lawmakers allowed the libraries and other purveyors and manufacturers of children’s toys to have a one-year stay, so that they can make a decision about the dangers of the lead-based paint.
